Simple introduction about writer Michael Ondaatje
ClaraCho

A quite long time ago, I had a chance to watch the movie titled "English Patient."
At that time, I really felt happy to have a chance to watch such an exciting movie, as usual, I bought a book written by Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje.

At that time, I did not know that he is such an internationally famous immigrated Canadian writer who was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and educated in England before coming to Canada to attend university here, yet, he never went back to England or Sir Lanka.

He was born the year of 1943, at an early age, his parents got divorced, so he happened to be educated in England to high school, yet, after he become successful as a writer, during his interview, he mentioned that if he stayed in England, he could never be a writer, because it is not easy to become a writer in England only "have" people could be, however, Canada is an open society it is easy to become a writer.

He wrote mostly poems at first, but gradually start writing novels and short stories. He also benefited from rewards like Man Booker Prize, Giller Prize, and Governor General's Reward.

The English Patient has been translated into 30 languages and made a movie as well got a couple of more rewards.
The English Patient won nine Oscars, making him the most celebrated Canadian writer.

Introduce the movie to the reader is not easy, however, one scene I never forget is the man carrying a badly injured from the airplane landing, a beautiful lady into the mountain cave which is cooler than the desert, leaving her behind and tell her he will be back with help, on the way he was captured as a German spy, so could not go back sooner, later when he went back there, she already died from her injury, hunger, and coldness.

The movie was made in 1996, it's a war romantic drama, a Canadian army nurse, Hana tended the badly burned main character from the airplane shot down, the end he dies too, after revealing a terrible heartache story to her.

Now, I am reading his book which the title is "Running in the Family", after more than 25 years after leaving his home county, when he went back there what he found there about his parents and grandparents had led doomed life.
It is almost his family history against exotic backgrounds.

This sentence was written by Douglas Amarasekera, who works for Ceylon Sunday Times,
"The Americans were able to put a man on the moon because they knew English. The Tamils whose knowledge of English was poor, thought that the earth was flat."
The more we know the country where we live, then, can we have a better quality of life.
