About Canadian painted and written scenery
ClaraCho

As we grew up in Korea, at school, we are more learned about the country of the U.S. and England, than most of any country in this world. Even when we choose the country where we will go to immigrate, we did not pay any interest in Canada's history or politics.

Since Canada is a young country and easy to come here to live, without too many qualifications asked to become Canadian Citizenship.

That I slowly changed my opinion of Canada gradually, and now, I really love living here as a Canadian.

You know now when you travel aboard, the Canadian Passport is getting really respected by foreign countries.

Even though I always my half of my heart is longing for the country where I left as a young woman.

Last few days, I started re-read old book which I read in April 2015, that book a lot of time in my mind, the title of the book is "The Underpainter" written by Jane Urquhart, a Canadian author, 1997, who won the Governor General's Literary Award and so far this book is one of her best, well famous written book.

The Governor General's Award is Canadian Literature Award and for Canadian writers, it is quite prestigious the award gives so much support to the Canadian writer, and a lot of Canadian writers benefit from that award.

I read a quiet book that was written by the author who got this award.

The book title ‘Underpainter’ is used by this book's writer because I could not find meaning in the dictionary.

After reading that book, I realized that under painter is a painter, yet, only paints on china or paper without creativity, just copying the drawing on the surface. The author is a woman who described Canada's scenery so delicately and beautifully it was hard the book down during my reading.

Especially northern Canada, around Great Lakes, where I have never been there, even though I lived in Canada more than for 50 years, I never travel more than North of Sudbury.

I felt shame for myself about writing off Canada's northern part as my traveling destination.

Mr. Austin the main character of this book is American, yet, most of the summer came in northern Canada lakeside for the summer holiday, and met a lot of good, naive Canadian, one of them is the under- painter, another person whose name is Sara who used to be his model when Austin was painting in the summer season, after she became his mistress. After his success as a painter in New York, as well he is getting busy and did not visit northern Canada for a long time.

Yet, suddenly he got a mail from Sara who died, leaving her only property to him.

From there he tries to bring back his memory to the olden days when he was a young man, studying to be a painter.

All those good memories got from his honest warm Canadian friends, with a painter's eye, were described wonderfully.

When we talk about Canada's northern beauty of the scenery, we have to include the pictures of the Group of Seven Artists, where the McMichael Art Gallery, Kleniburg, On, you could view most of that artist's pictures. A long time ago, we used to live near the Art Gallery.

Mr. McMichael bought 10 acres of land and started collecting Group of Seven Artists pictures and later donated, to the Province of Ontario, now become 100 acres of National Treasure, last time, actually, this spring when I visited, the Gallery has more collection of Inuit, Netis and Contemporary artists, even a small section of Jewish Arts as well.

I bought some of the copy of Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, and A. Y. Jackson and framed it, and put them up on the wall of the farmhouse.

As for my personally favored artist, I like the pictures of Emily Carr who used to live in Vancouver, yet, sometimes visited Northern Ontario and met a group of seven artists as well. If our readers who never visited McMichael Art Gallery, you should visit there, since it is not too far from where you live. And if one of our Korean artists donates his art to the gallery, the artist's art could display at the gallery.
