NAPLES, Fla. – Lexi Thompson rode the momentum of last week’s victory into a hot start Thursday at the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Titleholders.
With her brother, Curtis, as caddie and a small group of family and friends in the gallery, Thompson opened with a 6-under-par 66 at Tiburon, leaving her two shots off the lead in a tie for third.
Thompson, 18, won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational on Sunday. She is looking to win her third event in five starts.
“She didn’t really miss a shot,” Curtis said. “She was close to flawless tee to green. I didn’t have to do much, I just helped on the greens.”
Lexi hit all 14 fairways and 16 greens in regulation.
Curtis is on the bag just for this special week with so much family on hand. He's a junior at LSU, who led the Tigers in scoring last season and won the Dixie Amateur two years ago.
“Curtis is a great green reader,” Lexi said. “He just gave me confidence on shots. We get along great, and we had a lot of fun together.”
Curtis is headed back to LSU after the tournament, and Lexi’s going with him to have Thanksgiving with her brother.
“Curtis is going to cook turkey dinner for her,” said Judy Thompson, their mother.
