As the season's first major gets underway this week for the LPGA, one of its all-time greats has come out with some pointed comments about one of the tour's most recognizable players.

Viewed for many years as a prodigy with incredible potential, Michelle Wie has yet to meet those lofty expectations in the eyes of her critics. For Annika Sorenstam, a 10-time major champion, the window for validation has all but closed.

"What I see now is that the talent that we all thought would be there is not there," Sorenstam said of Wie as part of an interview with Golf Magazine.

Ten years since her first appearance at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, where she tees off Thursday alongside 15-year-old Lydia Ko, Wie has yet to win a major championship. Nearly three years removed from the more recent of her two LPGA titles, the 23-year-old is coming off a 2012 season in which she missed 10 cuts in 23 events.

While Sorenstam is not yet ready to give up on Wie's career prospects, she does note the impact of the changing landscape in women's golf, one which has recently seen teens like Ko and 18-year-old Lexi Thompson not only contend on the LPGA, but win.

"She has a long way to go, let's put it that way," explained Sorenstam. "There was a time when the LPGA really needed her. I thought she had a lot to bring to the table. Now she's one of many."
