Round 1: BMW Championship

Round 1: BMW Championship September 15 2011 7:53 pm FedExCup wrap-up: Round 1, BMW LEMONT, Ill. ?With the first round of the BMW Championship now complete, here뭩 a look at the FedExCup implications based on the latest projections (click here). Nothing is official, of course, until after the final putt drops on Sunday: MOVING INSIDE TOP 30: Justin Rose made the biggest move in the projections thanks to that red-hot round of 63. The Englishman started the week at No. 34 and is now projected inside the all-important top five at No. 3. ?Jim Furyk won the FedExCup and the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola last year. But he came to Cog Hill ranked 35th and likely needs to finish 12th or better (based on last year뭩 point totals) to have a chance to defend. That뭩 why Thursday뭩 round of 68 was such a good start, moving him up 12 spots to No. 23. ?Camilo Villegas started the final regular season event as the bubble boy at No. 125 and tied for ninth to move to 109th. Since then it뭩 been a steady progression for the young Colombian, who tied for sixth at The Barclays to move up 58 spots and gained four more with a tie for 25th at TPC Boston. Villegas fired a 68 in the first round and moved up 17 spots in the projections to No. 30. He likely needs to finish fifth ?which is where he뭩 tied right now ?to advance. MOVING OUTSIDE THE TOP 30: Masters champion Charl Schwartzel has fallen out of the top 30 after shooting a 73 in the first round that included a disappointing 38 on his second nine. ?Kyle Stanley started the week as the bubble boy at No. 30. He bogeyed his first hole on Thursday but managed to make the turn in 1 under before two more bogeys on the back brought the Clemson man in at 72. He뭩 dropped seven spots in the projected standings, as a result, and needs three good rounds to get back on the plus side for Atlanta. ?Jason Dufner didn뭪 play poorly on Thursday, shooting an even par 71. But he entered the BMW ranked 29th and among the nine players who aren뭪 safe for East Lake. So Dufner, who lost the PGA Championship in a playoff, is now projected at No. 34, sliding five spots. ERNIE뭆 QUEST: Ernie Els didn뭪 do himself any favors in his bid to become the first man to start the Playoffs outside the top 125 and advance to East Lake. Els came to Cog Hill ranked No. 68 and likely needs to finish third or better in order to make the field for the TOUR Championship for the fifth straight year. But he opened with a 72, although he rallied after making three bogeys in his first six holes, and has only risen four spots. PUSHING FORWARD: John Senden isn뭪 quite inside the bubble yet. But the Aussie, who started this week 55th in points, is projected to 35th after shooting a 3-under 68 on Thursday. Senden has been playing well lately, with five finishes inside the top 30 in his last six starts. TOP FIVE WATCH: Only the top five in points after the BMW Championship will be able to control their own destiny in terms of winning the FedExCup at East Lake. Four of the top five going into this week are still projected to stay inside the top five. The only one projected to fall out is Luke Donald, with first-round leader Justin Rose projected to take his spot. Here뭩 a look at the top five coming into this week: Player First round Latest projection 1. Webb Simpson Shot 6-under 65, tied for 2nd, two shots off lead 1st 2. Dustin Johnson Defending BMW champion shot 5-over 76 2nd 3. Matt Kuchar Shot 1-over 72, highest score in last 16 rounds 4th 4. Luke Donald Shot 4-over 75; no birdies, two bogeys, one double 7th 5.
