State Farm Classic The Rail Golf Club Springfield, Ill. Sept. 3, 2006 Sorenstam shoots final-round 62 to win State Farm Classic Earns 69th career victory SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Sept. 3, 2006 ?Annika Sorenstam made her 69th career victory a memorable one on Sunday carding an electrifying 10-under-par 62 in the final round of the State Farm Classic to win by two shots. Sorenstam overcame a five-shot deficit and tied the LPGA Tour record for the lowest final round by a winner and also ties a tournament record for the lowest round. 밒 feel really good right now. I knew I had to post a low score, but I didn't know how low, and how low I would be able it go,?said Sorenstam, who has earned $1,576,450 this year and currently ranks third on the ADT Official Money List behind Lorena Ochoa and Karrie Webb. 밫o come from five behind, and to win by two, it's pretty amazing. It's something that I'm going to remember for quite sometime.? Sorenstam knew exactly what she needed to do on the final day at The Rail Golf Club to get her third victory of the year. She came out firing as she birdied her first three holes, sinking putts all from within 10 feet. Sorenstam pared 4, but she chipped-in on the fifth hole to record her fourth birdie of the day to go to 13-under and was three shots back from three-day leader Hjorth. 밯hen I chipped in on 5 I thought 멺ood, I'm climbing up the leaderboard. Just letting them know that I am here and I'm playing well,'?said Sorenstam, who took home a $195,000 paycheck. 밒t's always fun to be able to put a little pressure on the leaders.? And that is just what happened. Hjorth bogeyed the ninth hole to fall back to 15-under while Sorenstam birdied 11 and 12 to tie for the lead. 밒 felt good making the turn. When I rolled in the birdie putt on 11, I felt good and after that I played carefree,?said Sorenstam. 밒 hit the fairways and greens and just went for it. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.? Hjorth birdied 11 and 15, but hit her tee shot into the water on the par-3 16th hole to double bogey and fall back to 15-under. Sorenstam went on to finish her round just as she started, birdieing four of her final five holes, which included a 20-foot birdie putt on her final hole. Hjorth birdied 18 to go to 16-under, but it wasn't enough as Sorenstam had already finished her round at 19-under. 밫his win feels so good because I have been working so hard on my swing for so long and I just haven't felt like I have been able to finish. I think today I felt like I was in control most of the day. The key for me was to be able to start well and to finish it. I didn't feel like I left too much out there. Hopefully I'm changing the trend I have been doing for the last few months.? 2004 State Farm Classic champion Cristie Kerr also had a great round, carding a 5-under-par 67, which included three-straight birdies on 14, 15 and 16. Kerr finished the tournament at 17-under-par and alone in second place. 밒 had so many putts that lipped out this week and I misread so many putts, said Kerr, who has earned $1,279,314 this season. 밯hen that starts happening you are going to finish second. I played really well, though, and I feel good about my performance today. 밳ou never can count her (Annika) out. If she gets it going and she gets her confidence going anything is possible. She is awesome? Hjorth finished in a three-way tie for third with Il Mi Chung and rookie Seon-Hwa Lee at 273 (-16). Rookies Brittany Lang and Kyeong Bae posted final rounds of 66 and 68, respectively, to tie for sixth place with Nancy Scranton at 273 (-15). Final-round notes Sorenstam storms back in final round. Coming from behind to win a tournament isn't something new for Annika Sorenstam, the Swede has done it in 21 of her 69 wins on Tour. It marks the first time this season Sorenstam, who came from five shots down to win the State Farm Classic on Sunday, has made up a deficit to win. The last time she did it was 2005 when she successfully defended her title at the Mizuno Classic. She came from one shot down, posted a final-round 64 and defeated Young Kim by two shots. Sorenstam's largest come-from-behind victory was in 2001 at The Office Depot Hosted by Amy Alcott, where she came back from a 10-stroke deficit to Pat Hurst and carded a final-round 66 to force a playoff with Mi Hyun Kim. Sorenstam went on to win the sudden-death playoff on the first hole and tied the LPGA record for largest come-from-behind win. Ochoa holds lead in ADT Official Money List, Rolex Player of Year and Vare Trophy standings. Although Lorena Ochoa did not win the State Farm LPGA Series Bonus Pool on Sunday after tying for 11th place at the State Farm Classic, she did hold on to her lead on ADT Official Money List, Rolex Player of the Year race and Vare Trophy race for the lowest scoring average. Ochoa has now earned $1,864,754 this year and has a $156,0001 lead over Webb, who did not play in Springfield last week. In the Rolex Player of the Year race, Ochoa has 207 points to Webb's 184. With her victory in Springfield this week, world number one Annika Sorenstam currently has 182 points, just two points behind Webb. Sorenstam won the ADT Official Money List title, Rolex Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy last year. The 69-time LPGA Tour winner also accomplished the feat in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2002. Kerr moves up ADT Official Money List. With her second-place finish on Sunday at the State Farm Classic, Cristie Kerr moved up two spots on the ADT Official Money List from sixth to fourth. Kerr, an eight-time winner on the LPGA Tour, has earned $1,279,314 so far this season. Kerr has recorded two wins this year, the Franklin American Mortgage Championship benefiting the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in May and the CN Canadian Women's Open last month. Low scores in final round. Forty-six of the 70 players who played in Sunday's final round of the State Farm Classic shot under-par rounds, including 24 rounds in the 60s. Seven-year LPGA Tour member Jamie Hullett tied her career-low with a 6-under-par 66 in the final round and tied for 19th. Hullett has shot a 66 four times during her career. Rookie Brittany Lang also tied her career-low round, carding her second 66 of the week in the final round. Lang, who tied for sixth, also shot a 66 in Thursday's opening round and three other times this season. Aside from Annika's 10-under-par 62 on Sunday, two-time LPGA Tour winner Karen Stupples also put together a great round as she shot a season-low 7-under-par 65 to tie for 13th place. Stupples previous season low was a 66, which she shot during the first round of the Fields Open in Hawaii, where she tied for 49th and during the second round of the Evian Masters, where she tied for 10th. Sorenstam earns third stay at Canyon Ranch. In addition to winning the State Farm Classic and a $195,000 paycheck, Lorena Ochoa also earned her third all-inclusive stay for two at a Canyon Ranch resort. In a combined effort to promote health and overall well-being among Tour players, Canyon Ranch will provide every winner of an LPGA event with an all-inclusive stay at one of Canyon Ranch's two destination resorts. Sorenstam received two previous stays for victories at the MasterCard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta and the U.S. Women's Open conducted by the USGA.
