Lincicome wins Women's World Match Play Championship July 9, 2006 GolfWeb Wire Services GLADSTONE, N.J. -- Brittany Lincicome won the Women's World Match Play Championship for her first LPGA Tour victory, beating Juli Inkster 3 and 2 in the all-American final on Sunday. Advertisement The 20-year-old Lincicome had a 5-up lead after eight holes against the 46-year-old Inkster and ended the match with a conceded par on the par-4 16th. In the morning semifinals, Lincicome edged Mexico's Lorena Ochoa with a 20-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, and Inkster beat U.S. Solheim Cup teammate Paula Creamer 5 and 4. The third-seeded Ochoa beat the fifth-seeded Creamer 3 and 2 in the third-place match. Lincicome, seeded 39th, earned $500,000 for her breakthrough victory after making $392,258 in 33 previous LPGA Tour starts over the last two seasons. With her father carrying her bag in hot afternoon conditions on the hilly Hamilton Farm course, Lincicome took the lead on the 533-yard, par-5 second hole, reaching the front edge of the green in two and two-putting for a birdie. She won the par-3 third and par-4 fifth with pars, halved the par-4 sixth with a birdie - holing out from 18 feet after Inkster made a 20-footer -- and took a 4-up lead with a par on the par-3 seventh. Lincicome won the par-4 eighth with another par, but lost the par-5 ninth when Inkster got up and down for a birdie from a right greenside bunker. Lincicome hit her second shot into the left bunker, but had an awkward stance. Lincicome then hit a wedge to about a foot on the par-4 10th - the hole she birdied a couple of hours earlier in beating Ochoa -- to set up her third birdie of the round and push her lead back to 5-up. All Inkster could do was call out "Great shot!" when they reached the green. Inkster won the par-3 12th with a par and took the par-4 15th with a birdie to cut her deficit to three holes, but Lincicome ended the match with her par on 16. Lincicome started the week with a 20-hole victory over Michele Redman, overcoming a three-hole deficit after nine holes. The champion then beat Brandie Burton (2 and 1) and Kyeong Bae (3 and 2), and Michelle Wie (4 and 3). In the semifinals, Lincicome beat Ochoa with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 19th hole, the 10th because the front-nine pin positions had already been changed for the title match. The eighth-seeded Inkster, coming off a 1-up quarterfinal victory over top-seeded Annika Sorenstam, had five straight birdies in her win over Creamer. Inkster won the Safeway International in March for her 31st career LPGA Tour. The Hall of Famer is 5-1 in Solheim Cup singles and won 18 straight matches in her 1980-82 U.S. Women's Amateur victories. She's 11-3 in match play on the tour. Divots: Inkster earned $300,000 from the $2 million purse, Ochoa made $200,000 to push her Tour-leading total to $1,446,641, and Creamer took home $150,000. ... Lincicome is the second first-time winner in the 2-year-old event. Last year, 60th-seeded Marisa Baena beat Meena Lee 1-up in the final. ... Lincicome also joined Inkster and Cristie Kerr as the only U.S. winners in 17 Tour events this year.
