2005 Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort
Magical Finish: Glover Fit for Victory
By Sports Network - October 23, 2005
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Lucas Glover fired a 7-under 65 on Sunday to break through for his first win at the Funai Classic. Glover holed out from a greenside bunker for birdie on the 72nd hole to complete the event at 23-under-par 265.
The win for Glover was his second in the United States as he also won on the Nationwide Tour.
Lucas Glover reacts to his bunker hole-out on the 18th Sunday."That was a shot to just get close and make par and see what happens coming down the stretch," said Glover, who collected $792,000 for his first tour win. "It happened to trickle over the front edge. I'm pretty fortunate."
Tom Pernice, Jr. managed a 3-under 69 to end one shot back at minus-22. Pernice had shared the lead after three rounds with Rich Beem and Tim Clark.
Ryan Palmer, the 2004 champion, carded an 8-under 64 to nearly defend his title. He shared third place at 21-under-par 267 with Geoff Ogilvy (69), Justin Rose (68), Beem (70) and Harrison Frazar (68). Rose had led at 23 under, but bogeyed two of his last three holes.
The third and final rounds were completed on Sunday. Weather delays on Friday and Saturday pushed the finish of the third round to Sunday morning.
Glover began the final round three strokes behind the trio of leaders. After parring his first two holes, he drained a birdie try on the par-3 third. He moved to 18 under as his birdie try on the fifth fell into the cup.
The 25-year-old birdied the seventh, but tripped to a bogey on the next. That was his first bogey since the 10th hole in the second round.
Glover settled himself by parring the ninth and 10th. He sank a birdie try on the 11th and made it two straight with a birdie on 12.
The South Carolina native converted his third straight birdie on the 13th to get to 21 under. Glover parred his next three holes. He climbed into a tie for the lead with a birdie on the par-4 17th.
Glover, who played collegiately at Clemson, then holed out from a greenside bunker for birdie on the last to move atop the leaderboard at 23 under. He then sat and watched as no one in the final three groups could match his 23-under total.
"I had a good lie and I've been short on all my bunker shots this week, so I just squared up the face a little. I did have a perfect lie on the up-slope, but on the long bunker shots you are always afraid to hit it long. But I made sure I hit it a little bit since I've been short on my bunker shots a lot."
Pernice ran in a 15-foot birdie putt on the second to get his round going. He then got up and down for birdie on the fourth from a bunker for his second birdie.
The 46-year-old two-putted for birdie on the par-5 10th to get to 22 under and a share of the lead alongside Rose. However, Pernice could only par out to end one shot back.
"I had some chances on the back nine early. I two-putted 10 for birdie and gave myself some relatively good chances on 12, 13 and 14," said Pernice. "I had good putts on all of them, but they pretty much lipped out. I was a little disappointed I didn't have a better putt at 18, that's all. Didn't quite hit it firm enough."
Brandt Jobe shot 5-under 67 to end at 20-under-par 268. He shared eighth place with Mark Calcavecchia. Calcavecchia, who tied for sixth last year here, posted 70 in the final round. Clark (72), Mark Wilson (71) and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman (65) were one stroke further back at minus-19.
