"Keowul-yunga" is the real ambassador of Korea As a retired citizen in Canada, it is a kind of routine having a vacation or holidays at one of Caribbean Islands during the long cold Canadian winter. Those vacationers have been known as Snow Birds among the people in North America. As I have been on since my retirement, this winter I and my wife with other couples were in a resort named "Coral Costal Caribe" in La Romana, Dominica Republic located in the center of Cabibbean Islands for 8 days playing golf and taking sunbathing at the beach. In the huge resort, there were so many vacationers from all over the world, especially Canada, US and European countries,but hardly from Asian countries. We enjoyed there our holidays making new friends who played golf together sometimes and chatting each other sharing life stories and eating universal foods served too. And during the night at bedroom, used to watching TV that had countless channels with Spanish version that hardly understood but a few English. But at bedroom watching TV was a kind of routine, changing screen without any attention on it. That night on the way changing TV screen, I and my wife saw a familiar face in the screen by chance. And I stopped changing channel and kept watching on it. That familiar faces were the famous actor and actress but couldn't remember their names at first but it was on the tip of my tongue right away. Suddenly my wife told me they were the talents of Mr. Bae Youngjun and Choi Jeewoo. I said you were right my darling, you were still remembering them,weren't you. I praised her memory so high on that TV drama. I believe more than 10 years has passed since we watched TV Drama named " Keowul-yunga" in Toronto,Canada. Nowadays we do not need to pay any fees to borrow a video tape of korean movies or home dramas because it is possible to watch those through PC. But at that time it was a common to watch video of koreans was renting from a korean store near by. Watching encountered "Keowul-yunga" again here in Dominican Republic made me and my wife more than surprise but refreshed our memory on that sitcom that a young couple's loving story with many unexpected hurdles against them was being solved by them for their goal achieved. That night it lasted on more than one and half hours. Of course,again, sound was by Spanish that hardly understood,but Ok for us to watch it because watching pictures only ignoring sound made us understand easily everything on it. We couldn't understand when the rest of part of that drama will be on again because of Spanish version. A few years later I was told that drama was so popular among the audience in Japan and other neighbouring Asian countries that made people who watched that drama knew "Keowul-yunga" but Korea since I watched first time. And I was told there were so many fan groups in Japan too. The talent Mr. Bae was known as "Yonsama" in Japan. Because of this "keowul-yunga", so many visitors from Japan and other countries had come to Korea to see what, I was told. Dominican Republic is located entirely opposite side from my motherland Korea that anybody can figure it out easily by checking a globe. I am pretty sure that night many vacationers and native Dominicans watched "Keowul-yunga" and people who watched it will remember Korea with passion and impression about Korea. Here in North and South America including Caribbean Islands are the centre of western cultures. With this kind of circumstances,watching "Keowul-yunga" on TV here is a big surprise to me. I believe there are so many embassies and consulates dispatched from Korea. But "Keowul-yunga" is the only real ambassador representing Korea who has made real profit and benefits for Korea, while other diplomats are usually spending the budget in the name of representing Korea that I hardly know whether they have really made benefit or profit for Korea in the world stage. Travelling several countries, I have realized my homeland Korea has been known to world tremendously with images of well developed, high living standard of it's people that have made me so proud of my homeland. This kind of images of Korea have been from ordinary citizens, dramas and business but hardly Korean diplomats, I believe. Living as immigrant in Canada that is my second home country, facing this kind of unexpected events made me thinking my homeland,Korea is the greatest country in the world except it's political felonies who have presided today still.
