No-liquids rule relaxed Canada, U.S. now allow passengers to take aboard planes small toiletries from home, secure stores at airport Sep. 25, 2006. 02:53 PM DALE BRAZAO STAFF REPORTER Canada and the United States are partially relaxing the bans on liquids and gels that travellers can take aboard a plane. Travellers in both countries will now be allowed to purchase small amounts from airport tuck shops and duty free stores after passing through security. In addition, small, travel-size toiletries brought from home and carried through security in clear, resealable bags, will be allowed on board. The relaxed rules will take effect tomorrow at all airports in Canada and the United States. A total ban on such products, instituted after a plot to bomb jets flying to North America from Great Britain was foiled, is no longer needed, said U.S. Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley. According to Transport Canada, passengers will be permitted to take liquid, gels and aerosols through security screening at Canadian airports provided they are "packaged in containers with a capacity of 90 ml/90 grams (3 oz.) or less and that the containers fit comfortably in one clear, closed and resealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than 1 liter." Only one bag per passenger will be allowed. Baby formula, baby food or milk for a child under two can also be brought on board. Prescription medicine matching the passenger's ticket will also be permitted in a person's carry-on luggage. "We've been working very closely with the U.S. in analyzing the threat and developing possible changes to the measures," Transport Canada spokesperson Vanessa Vermette said today. "We want to ensure that our systems are compatible, and to make sure that transborder flights and travelers can flow easily." Hawley called the new procedures a "common sense" approach that would maintain a high level of security at airports but ease conditions for passengers. "We've worked very closely with Canada, and I'm very pleased to say that that has borne fruit," said Michael Jackson, deputy secretary of Homeland Security. "And today, Canada is making an announcement very much similar to ours, so that we can align our two processes at the checkpoints - Canada and the United States - and thereby make it easier on passengers." While these regulations are in effect at Canadian and American airports, passengers connecting through or departing from the United Kingdom destinations should be aware that these items continue to be prohibited on flight departing the United Kingdom.
