Its commander, Maj.-Gen. The South Korean army is well-trained and has an envied reputation. It's little-known that during the Vietnam War, some 300,000 Korean troops served there at one time or another. Its "Tiger" division had little trouble being more than a match for North Vietnamese troops. South Korea's contribution to the Iraq war was done with minimal publicity at home; troops left Korea in almost semi-secrecy three years ago. Despite that, 18,000 Koreans volunteered to go to Iraq. The government plans to downsize its commitment to 2,300 troops, roughly the size of the Canadian contingent in Afghanistan, which hopes to boost its forces to include our ancient (30-plus-years-old) Leopard tanks that have never seen action but have been updated and should be effective so long as they don't have to fight other tanks. Korean soldiers have a no-nonsense reputation and are disciplined in a way that our troops are not. They provide the security for much of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which includes protecting airport convoys, manning checkpoints and protecting World Health Organization and UN staff. With more combat soldiers needed to take on the Taliban in Kandahar, field commanders must wish they could use the formidable Koreans. But that would cause controversy in Seoul, which America doesn't need. Besides, the positive effect of Koreans in Kurd country is an unexpected benefit, and a textbook example of how temporary occupiers of a volatile country can make friends and win admiration while making themselves indispensable.
