National Post reporter Peter Goodspeed ventures into secretive, autocratic North Korea as it takes its first steps to end decades of isolationism. In the first of a five-part series, he goes on a strange, compulsory trip to the palace that houses the embalmed body of former leader, now revered as god, Kim Il Sung. 내셔날 포스트 신문기자 피터 굿스피드씨가, 몇십년동안을 이세상에서 고립되여 살아온 정책을 포기하고 외부에 문을 열려고 하는 철권통치국가 북한을 여행했다. 다섯부분으로 나뉘어 싣게되는 기사중, 그 첫번째로, 이상하면서도, 강제적으로, 신(God)으로 존경받고있는, 썩지않게 잘 화장되여 전시되여 있는 김일성의 시신을 보관하여 전시하고 있는 궁전을 구경 하여야만 했다. PYONGYANG - The only splashes of colour in this grim, grey capital come from the propaganda posters that praise North Korea's leaders and promote the country as "paradise on Earth." 평양 - 온통회색과 어둠침침한 수도 평양에서 오직 반짝거리는 색갈은 "지구상의 낙원"으로 선전하고 북한의 영도자들을 추겨세우는 흑색선전 포스터에서만 볼수있었다. There are no street lights, neon signs or store displays, just floodlit monuments and murals that rally people with slogans and utopian visions of a Stalinist state with Korean characteristics. 가로등도 안보이고, 네온싸인이나 잘 진열된 상가도 안보이고, 다만 한글로 잘 표현된 스탈린주의 국가의 유토피아사상과 슬로건을 환영하는 인파들을 그린 벽화와 불빛 찬란한 동상들만이 번쩍일 뿐이었다. Loudspeakers on lampposts blare out propaganda messages to gaunt-faced workers waiting in long lineups for the bus. Broad highways, built to carry up to 10 lanes of traffic, are empty, except for the occasional chauffeur-driven government Mercedes and the odd rusting truck. 길가 가로등기둥에 설치된 확성기에서는 버스를 기다리는 긴 행열의 웃음기없는 노동자들을 향하여 끝없은 흑색선전을 토해내고 있었다. 10차선이 넘는 고속도로는 달리는 차량이 보이지 않고, 다만 가끔씩 운전수들이 딸린 정부고관들이 사용하는 벤츠들과 녹이슬어 털털 거리면서 기어가는 추럭뿐이었다. A famine that killed two million people in the late 1990s has eased, but North Korea is still plagued by chronic malnutrition and carries the scent of a country living close to the edge. 90년대 후반에 일어난 기근으로 2백만명이 굶어 죽은 참상은 다소 해소됐다고 하나, 현재도 계속되는 영양실조와 아사직전에 처해있는 재난은 아직도 계속되고 있다. The countryside is bathed in a golden autumnal glow as dump trucks loaded with hundreds of city residents travel daily to nearby farms to harvest rice and grain by hand. Sheaves lie stacked in fields worked with wooden ox carts instead of tractors. 시골들녘은, 쌀을 비롯한 곡식을 맨손으로 수확하기위해 근처의 농장에 매일같이 수백명의 도시민들을 덤프추럭에 싣고있는것과 대조하여, 황금색갈로 뒤덮혀 있었다. 추수된 곡식낯가리는 트랙터 대신에 소달구지를 이용하여 들녘복판에 쌓아놓여 있다. Everywhere, the rhythms of daily life remain plodding, determined, stoic and sullen. 어디를 보나, 할수없이 수동적으로, 맥빠진모양의 삶의 행렬이 이어지고 있는 모습뿐이다. A "Hermit Kingdom," international pariah and charter member of the "Axis of Evil," North Korea remains the world's most secretive and potentially dangerous country. 국제적으로 인간이 대접못받는 나라 "굶주린 왕국" 이요, "악의 축"으로 불리는 불량국가중의 하나로 낙인찍인 북한은 이지구상에서 가장 장막에 싸인 나라요 또한 위험성이 많은 나라로 현재 존재하고 있다. Yet it is trying to step away from decades of self-imposed isolation. 그러나 지금 그렇게 몇십년을 장막에 싸여 지내던 삶의 방식을 탈피 할려고 애쓰는 모습이 보인다. Ravaged by famine, facing economic collapse and preparing for a crucial round of international negotiations over its nuclear weapons program in November, North Korea has suddenly put out a welcome mat for foreigners. 기근으로 황폐됐고,경제적파탄에 직면해 있으면서, 또 한편으로는 11월중에 핵무기 개발계획을 주제로한 국제적인 협상을 준비 하면서, 지금 북한은 외국인들을 위하여 예상치 않게 문호를 개방하고 있었다. Busloads of tourists have begun to rumble through this once forbidden city. Businessmen are arriving looking for deals, and journalists and diplomats, who were once discouraged from visiting, are now being allowed in. 버스에 꽉찬 여행객들은 한때는 금단의 도시였던 이곳으로 몰려들고 있다. 장사꾼들은 장사할것을 찾아 이곳에 모여들기 시작했고, 한때는 방문이 절대불가였던 기자들이나 외교관들이 지금은 입국이 허용되고 있다. What they find is a crumbling state officially ruled over by an 11-year-old corpse. 아직도 죽은 시체(김일성)가 11년째 공식적으로 통치하고 있는, 망해가는 국가를 관광객들은 보게되는 것이다. North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung, the "Great Leader" who died in 1994 after ruling the country with a Stalinist grip for 49 years, was officially declared its "Supreme Leader Eternal" when the constitution was revised in 1998. 49년동안을 스탈린식 철권 통치로 나라를 다스렸던, 위대한 지도자요, 북한이라는 나라의 창시자 김일성이 1994년에 사망한 이후,1998년에 수정된 헌법은 "영생하시는 위대한 지도자"로 공식적으로 선포되여 군림하고 있었다. Visiting foreigners usually have a strictly controlled itinerary and the first thing they must do is pay tribute to Kim Il Sung. 북한을 방문하는 외국인들은 그들이 만들어 놓은 여행스케쥴에 따라 꼼짝없이 움직이게 되여 있으며, 그중의 첫번째 해야 하는 스케쥴은 김일성에게 경배해야 하는것이다. Ordinary tourists are taken to a giant bronze statue of the dead dictator on Mansu Hill. 보통 여행객들은 먼저 만수산궁에 설치되여 있는, 구리로 만든 죽은 독재자 김일성의 웅장한 동상으로 안내된다. The largest one-piece statue in the world, it stands 27 metres high and presents a determined Kim Il Sung sweeping an arm out toward the futuristic city he built as a propaganda showcase, with wide, tree-lined avenues, huge public squares, massive monuments and geometric concrete buildings. 한편의 조각으로는 지구상에서 가장 큰, 높이가 27미터요, 먼장래를 꿈꾸면서, 콩크리트 빌딩과, 수많은 조각들과 넓은 광장, 가로수가 잘 가꾸어져 있는 넓은거리를 포함, 흑색선전의 창구를 하기위해 ,그가 건설한, 도시를 향하여 한손을 높이들어 방향을 제시하는 독재자 김일성을 잘 나타내고 있다. Other select groups of foreigners bypass Mansu Hill and are brought to a massive grey granite palace on the edge of Pyongyang to view Kim Il Sung's embalmed corpse. 다른 외국인 관광객은 만수산궁을 지나쳐, 잘 화장되여 전시시키고 있는 김일성을 보기위해 평양외곽의 회색빛의 웅장한 궁전으로 안내 되였다.
