KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. ?With the wind whipping around the Ocean Course at a brisk clip, only Vijay Singh seemed to be making any major progress at the PGA Championships on Friday.
The 49-year-old Singh birdied three of the first seven holes to move to 4 under par, two strokes behind leader Carl Pettersson, who tees off in the afternoon.
After mostly calm conditions for the opening round, players returned to find flags blowing stiffly in the wind and some threatening clouds hanging low. It began raining hard in the area not long after play ended Thursday, but there were no delays early in the second round.
Pettersson was a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy and Gary Woodland, and none of the three were scheduled to tee off until the afternoon.Tiger Woods, another afternoon starter, was three strokes behind the leader.
The past 16 majors have been won by 16 different players. Woods hasn't won one since 2008.
Singh's last major title was the PGA in 2004, and he's been solid so far this week. He was moving up the leaderboard Friday, which was more than could be said for Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who began the day at 5 under but bogeyed his first two holes.
Alex Noren struggled early, going 4 over through six holes to fall to 1 under for the tournament.
Phil Mickelson was looking to attack the course a bit more aggressively on the second day. He birdied his first two holes before his progress stalled. He was at even par with his second round less than half over.
