LONDON, 1 August - LI Xiaoxia (CHN) won the first table tennis medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games for China, taking gold in women's singles at Excel on Wednesday.
LI beat world No.1 and top seed DING Ning (CHN)4-1 (11-8, 14-12, 8-11, 11-6, 11-4). The result means LI can dispense with her unflattering nickname, "Miss No.2", and join CHEN Jing, DENG Yaping, WANG Nan, and ZHANG Yining in the all-Chinese list of Olympic champions in women's singles.
It is LI's first table tennis gold at her first Olympic Games. All the previous winners also took gold at their first Olympic Games.
CHEN topped the podium on her Games debut at Seoul 1988; DENG at Barcelona 1992 (before defending her title at Atlanta 1996), WANG at Sydney 2000; and ZHANG at Athens 2004 (also Beijing 2008).
FENG Tianwei (SIN) won the bronze medal, defeating Kasumi ISHIKAWA (JPN) 4-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-6,11-5).
Li Xiaoxia: "I'm very excited. This has been my dream since being a little girl; I dreamed of being an Olympic champion. We (her and DING) are the same level but today I performed better than I expected. My family are in China. I want to thank my parents. They have sacrificed a lot to make my dreams come true."
Feng Tianwei (SIN): "It means a lot to me because I wasn't in good condition coming into the tournament. I really wanted to get a medal but I wasn't confident. Today I showed myself I could do it. I need to believe in myself more." "I didn't know much about the Olympic Games. But I remember seeing DENG Yaping (CHN, Barcelona 1992 Olympic gold medallist) on the podium. And that made me want to win a medal."
