AKRON, Ohio ?Luke Donald didn뭪 have to think too hard to explain the difference between the first two rounds and the 64 he shot Saturday at Firestone Country Club.
he answer was putting and the numbers don뭪 lie. Donald needed only 26 putts in the first round as compared with 30 and 31 on Thursday and Friday, respectively. He뭩 9 under, as a result, and three strokes off the lead held by Australia뭩 Adam Scott.
"It뭩 nice to get in position, yeah," Donald said. "I putted a lot better today. That was really the only difference between today and the first two days. I뭭e been swinging it nicely, hitting a lot of fairways, a lot of greens. Just was able to get the putter rolling and hole a few putts, which was a pleasant surprise."
Donald, who ranks third in the FedExCup, is looking for his second PGA TOUR victory of the season and hoping to join Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as the only players to have won multiple World Golf Championships in the same year. Donald broke a five-year PGA TOUR victory drought when he won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year.
The Englishman also has two wins on the European Tour this year, the last of which came the week prior to the British Open. Judging from his post-round comments, though, Donald is again peaking at the right time.
"Tee to green, this is as solid as I뭭e played for a while," Donald said. "I think I뭭e had rounds where I뭭e been very solid. I hit the ball quite well at the Scottish (Open), but the last three days have been very solid in terms of greens and fairways."

Johnson makes big move with 64
By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
AKRON, Ohio ?The way Zach Johnson figures it, he뭩 got an "outside chance" on Sunday at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
He gave himself the opportunity with a third-round 64 that included three consecutive birdies on the back nine. The former Masters champion is 8 under through three rounds and four strokes off the lead.
"I put myself in good positions and made some putts today, a couple nice saves that kept my momentum going," Johnsons said. "I felt like I played really good on Thursday and Friday, just the score didn뭪 show. It was nice to see it come together today."
Johnson, who ranks 31st in the FedExCup, said Firestone ?which he calls a "hidden gem" ?was quite receptive on Saturday. The course was still soft, and the wind was quiet, which was somewhat odd considering the storms that are expected to blow in Saturday afternoon.
"I think Akron, Firestone Country Club, is probably one of the most consistently consistent courses we play every year," Johnson said. "Maybe a couple shots easier, a couple shots harder, but it뭩 always in really good condition, it뭩 always tough. It magnifies your weaknesses. If you뭨e off, it뭠l show. If you뭨e on, you can put a number up. The course feels like a major championship style course, because you뭭e got to hit quality shots."
Johnson, who only had 25 putts on Saturday, played his usual fairways-and-greens game in the third round. He ranks seventh in fairways hit and tied for seventh in greens in regulation for the week, finding nine and 14, respectively in the third round. He wasn뭪 surprised by his solid play.
"I뭭e been playing well, I just haven뭪 put it together," Johnson said.

Woods pronounces iron game 멳ack?
By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
AKRON, Ohio ?Tiger Woods wasn뭪 particularly pleased with the way he drove the ball or the way he putted on Saturday at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
But the iron game he pronounced as "back" was cause for optimism even though Woods shot a 72 that left him 2 over for the tournament and tied for 38th.
Woods made two birdies and four bogeys on Saturday. He didn뭪 hit a fairway on the front nine and found just four all day. But he only missed five greens, which was his best total of the week, even though the 33 putts he took once he got there left a lot to be desired.
"I started getting a feel in my hands," Woods said. "I had to hit the ball the right number. Just about every iron shot was on my number, which was great. Still struggling a little bit with my setup and alignments off of tee shots because I used to curve the ball a lot more. ?It뭩 kind of hard to trust when I뭢 out there in tournament play, and most of my shots are missing right on the edges of fairways, so I뭭e just got to get more committed to that.
밃nd I뭢 hitting the ball straighter. It뭩 just a nice change, but it뭩 still a change."
Woods felt like he drove the ball a lot better on the back nine, and that뭩 because he now understands his carefully-crafted new swing well enough that he was able to fix it on the fly.
"(I) really hit it good coming home, started hitting the ball the right flight, the right traj, every tee shot was flash, everything was back to where it was at the beginning of the week," Woods said. "Only difference is I didn뭪 putt well again today, two horseshoes, three-putted 18, and then obviously made a bogey with a sand wedge there on 16, that뭩 four shots right there, I just threw away right there."
Woods said he뭩 had a difficult time getting used to the bent grass greens this week. He뭩 been putting on Bermuda at home in Florida, and he뭩 eager to get back on that grass next week at Atlanta Athletic Club during the PGA Championship.
"I felt more comfortable when I was playing my practice round (at AAC) on Monday because that뭩 basically what we have at home," Woods said. "So looking forward to Atlanta in that regard."
Woods said he hopes to "continue building" on Sunday at Firestone, where he has won seven times. He뭩 still looking for that spark, that really good round, that would send him to Atlanta on a positive note.
"As I said, my iron game came back today," Woods said. "I hit the ball the right numbers all day, which was good. Just need to get more committed on my target lines starting off on the tee shots because the ball just doesn뭪 move anymore. I hit the ball so much straighter than I used to."

Donald looks to join elite group
AKRON, Ohio ?Luke Donald can뭪 complete the World Golf Championships slam thanks for Nick Watney뭩 win at the Cadillac Championship.
But the Englishman, who won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year, is making a spirited bid for his second PGA TOUR title of the season at Firestone Country Club.
Donald, who ranks fifth in the FedExCup, has just finished off a round of 64 to move to 9 under and into a tie for fourth. Right now, he뭩 one stroke off the lead held jointly right now by Keegan Bradley, Ryo Ishikawa and Fredrik Jacobson.
The world No. 1 is trying to become the third player to win multiple World Golf Championships in a single season ?joining Tiger Woods (1999, 2005 and 2006) and Phil Mickelson (2009).

Johnson vaults up board with 64
AKRON, Ohio ?Zach Johnson has been tweeting of late about how well his caddy, Damon Green, has been playing on the Champions Tour.
Well, Johnson showed his bag man a thing or two on Saturday when he made three consecutive birdies on the back nine at Firestone and climbed the leaderboard with a 64.
Johnson finished at 8 under and currently trails Keegan Bradley by three strokes. Johnson ranks 31st in the FedExCup and 15th in the Presidents Cup standings.
The former Masters champ started with consecutive birdies on Saturday and made another at the fourth hole. He turned in 33 after a bogey at the eighth hole, then shot 31 on the back.
The three consecutive birdies started at the par-3 15th hole where he made a 17-footer. He added a 10-footer at the 16th and drained a 43-footer at No. 17.

Furyk gets second Bridgestone ace
AKRON, Ohio ?Jim Furyk hasn뭪 had the most memorable of seasons so far this year.
But the veteran, who won the FedExCup last year, created a little excitement on Saturday when he aced the fifth hole with a 6-iron to get into red numbers for the day. Furyk, who won three times last year but only has two top-10s in 2011, currently is tied for 40th at 1 over for the tournament and 1 under for the round.
The ace, which followed a bogey, is the second for Furyk at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. He also aced the 15th hole in 2006 when he finished third.

Watson unleashes 415-yarder
AKRON, Ohio ?Bubba Watson has just hit a 415-yard drive at the 667-yard 16th hole on the way to making birdie.
That poke tied J.B. Holmes for the second-longest on the PGA TOUR this year. Holmes hit his on the 10th hole in the second round of the Valero Texas Open.
The longest drive this year was hit by Derek Lamely, who unleashed his 419-yarder on the seventh hole of the Old White TPC in the second round. Gary Woodland has one of 409 yards while Chris Couch has one of 408 and Steve Flesch has one of 404.
Watson, who was playing with Tiger Woods, still had 243 yards to the green and staked his approach to 13 feet. He ended up two-putting for birdie.
밳ou know, I hit two good drives earlier in the week, and it hasn뭪 rolled out like that.,?Watson said. 밄ut today I guess is a little bit downwind, so it just pushed it and it rolled pretty far today.?
When told how long the drive measured, Watson said, 밡ice, as long as I outdrove Tiger, that뭩 all I care about, because he hit a good one, too.?

Bradley alone at top of leaderboard
AKRON, Ohio ?Keegan Bradley seized sole possession of the lead with an 8-footer at the sixth hole.
He뭩 11 under now through eight holes and is one stroke ahead of Jason Day. Bradley got up-and-down from just in front of the green at the par-5 second for his first birdie and added another birdie putt of 11 feet at No. 5.
Day also got his round off to a strong start when he eagled the second. The Aussie made a birdie at the fifth hole, as well, and has just made the turn in 2 under.
Bradley started the third round at 8 under and tied for the lead with Adam Scott, Ryan Moore and Rickie Fowler. Scott is now tied with Ryo Ishikawa at 9 under while Fowler has just made his first birdie of the day after opening with consecutive bogeys.
Moore also had back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5, and he just added another at No. 8. He뭩 dropped back to 5 under, as a result, and is tied for 14th.

Ishikawa move could benefit many
AKRON, Ohio ?Ryo Ishikawa is making a nice move up the leaderboard which is good to see for a variety of reasons.
Not only is the teenager an immense talent, he has pledged his winnings this year ?with a goal of $2.4 million ?to the tsunami relief effort in Japan. He also contributes $1,200 per birdie.
Ishikawa, who has made three birdies and no bogeys on Saturday, now stands 8 under and tied for fourth, three strokes behind Keegan Bradley. He has played eight holes.
The winner of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational receives $1.4 million.
And one more sidelight ?if Ishikawa should go on to win on Sunday, he would be exactly one week older than the youngest winner in PGA TOUR history. Johnny McDermott was 19 years, 10 months and 14 days old when he won the 1911 U.S. Open.

Woods struggles in third round
AKRON, Ohio ?Saturday hasn뭪 been a particularly good one for Tiger Woods.
He bogeyed his first hole, hitting his second shot from the right fairway bunker over into the left rough, and made another at No. 8 when he again strayed right off the tee.
A 20-footer for birdie at the ninth briefly stopped the descent. But Woods squandered chances of 15, 10 and 15 feet on his next three holes.
The round isn뭪 over by any means, but right now Woods ranks 76th in driving accuracy for the week. He didn뭪 hit a fairway on the front nine Saturday and has only hit two of four on the back.
