From Austin's watery fall to Weir's singles play, Montreal saw history

MONTREAL -- Sure, it was played just north of the United States border, but the Americans captained by Jack Nicklaus were happy to earn their first Presidents Cup win on foreign land in Canada on Sunday.
Mike Weir's exceptional play on Sunday couldn't prevent an International loss. (WireImage)After a dominating performance in the two Foursome sessions -- the Americans took 10.5 of a possible 11 points -- the U.S. needed just three points in 12 Sunday singles matches to defeat the Internationals and retain The Presidents Cup. The final mark will show a 19.5-14.5 victory for the U.S., its fifth win since the biennial matches began in 1994.
The Internationals entered the final day needing a whopping 11 points to win. The Internationals took the singles, 7-5, but still came up four points short of what would have been an unprecedented comeback.
"It was a monumental hill and I'm very proud of both teams," International Team Captain Gary Player said. "Our mission was to come out and give golf a great boost to this country and I've never seen more enthusiasm in the gallery. Our guys can hold their head up high. They won more singles matches today and made a match of it."

While the Canadian fans were left with something to be desired with the overall outcome, there was no denying the pride of the Canucks when their national hero Mike Weir dramatically rallied to birdie his final two holes for a 1 up win over no less than world No. 1 Tiger Woods in the singles.
Weir said his win Sunday was on par with winning the 2003 Masters.
"It's right there with it," he said. "Obviously winning the Masters was such a thrill, but to play Tiger, you know, obviously he's the best there is and I had to play my absolute best to beat him."
Weir was one of Player's two captain's selections and led the Internationals in scoring with his 3.5 points -- more than proving he deserved to be here.
"To Mike Weir, I can say, well done my friend," Player said. "That's a big thing in your life."
Just how big?
Woody Austin braces himself....."For me being from Canada, to have this kind of support, it's overwhelming, really, and I'm having a tough time putting it into words what it really means to me because it's so shortly after," Weir said. "But when I look back on my career, this may be something, maybe even more special than the Masters, the support I've gotten here."
"For the pressure that he had all week, it was pretty phenomenal how he had to deal with that and the way he played," Woods said. "I mean, not a lot of people could actually have dealt with the things he had to deal with all week, and expectations, the pressure, and you know, questioning whether or not he should be picked on the team or not.
"There's a lot of different things that were going on. And the way he came out and played this week and represented all of Canada was impressive."
....but falls into the chilly water. (WireImage)Aside from Weir's outstanding win over Woods, the most memorable moment from Canada's President Cup will be from the Friday Four-Ball.
The always entertaining Woody Austin, a 43-year-old Presidents Cup rookie, was paired with David Toms -- who recorded the most points in a Presidents Cup with 4.5 out of a possible five -- and the stage was the 14th hole.
Depending on where the pin is, No. 14 is a driveable par 4 with water guarding the left-center portion of the green. When Toms hit his tee shot into the middle of the pond, Austin followed with a drive that also came to rest in the water, but far closer to dry land than his partner.
Trailing 1 down to Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabbatini who hit great drives -- Immelman just short of the green and Sabbatini on the dance floor -- Austin knew he had to take a crack at advancing his ball to the green. He took his shoes and socks off, rolled his pants to his knees and walked into the ankle-deep mucky water.
Austin's glove floats in the water after the incident. (WireImage)A split second after presumably making contact with the ball, Austin lost his balance on a rock and, in one of the funniest moments ever caught on live television, proceeded to fall face first into the pond.
While that image will live forever in the memory of those who witnessed it, Austin should also be remembered for the resilience he showed in that match. After that 14th hole, the Americans were 2 down with four to play.
But, Austin carried Toms on his back, birdied the last three holes of the match -- his sixth, seventh and eighth birdies of the day -- to grab an improbable half-point.
"I think what I'll remember most is what happened with Woody," Toms said. "You know, not necessarily going in the water, that was all funny and adds to his legacy, that he said, but the way that he finished up, birdieing last three holes.
"That was pretty impressive stuff and I was lucky enough to be his partner to see it. That was pretty gutsy, one of the gutsiest things I've seen in golf, really, to being totally soaked and a couple of holes later finishing up like that and for us to get a half point that was pretty awesome."
Austin humored the Canadian fans in his singles loss to Angel Cabrera. After Austin hit his tee shot on No. 14, he reached into his golf bag and pulled out a pair of scuba goggles to wear as he walked up the hole.
Austin made it very clear that earning a spot on the Presidents Cup team was one of the highlights of his career.

The week was for Captains
Is U.S. golf back?
"It's just been the greatest week. I talked to the other two rookies, Hunter [Mahan] and Lucas [Glover], about what we expected this week, and we all expected a fun week, but I could not have imagined this much fun," Austin said. "These guys, you know, we all get to hang out a little bit on TOUR, but it's more just you play your rounds, you see everyone every once in a while or whatever but I don't get the opportunity to have dinner with Phil and Tiger and hang around them in their atmosphere or whatever.
"I've gotten a different perspective," he added. "I already know how great they are as players and how good they are as people when I'm with them on the golf course.
"But now I've gotten to know just how great they are even off the golf course, which I haven't had -- they have been the funniest, greatest teammates I could ever have imagined. So if all comes to a close for me at this juncture, I couldn't have asked for a better week. If it continues, I'm going to bust my butt to get into another one, because it's been a blast and a half."
The seventh Presidents Cup marked the fourth time Nicklaus was the U.S. captain. Over that stretch he has compiled a 2-1-1 record.
"I get very sentimental about it," Nicklaus said. "I'm sentimental about it right now. I know that as you get older, you're right, your years are shorter; that you may not have those opportunities again. It may be the last time that I do it.
"And if that's the case, that's fine. That's a pretty good way to bow out. You know, the reaction that I get from these guys and the support that I've gotten from them, not only the support that I've tried to give them, but the support they have given me, is just something that, you don't have very many times in a lifetime."
