Wie misses Casio cut by one stroke Nov. 25, 2005 GolfWeb Wire Services KOCHI, Japan -- Michelle Wie couldn't get much closer to making the cut at a men's event. Advertisement Wie bogeyed the final two holes Friday, missing the cut by just one stroke at the Casio World Open. Things were looking good for the 16-year-old Hawaiian when she drained a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-5 10th at the Kochi Kuroshio Country Club course to go 2 over. But a pair of late bogeys left her with a 75 for a 36-hole total of 4 over 148. "Obviously, I'm very disappointed," Wie said. "I played as well as I could. I tried my best today, but things just didn't work out and it wasn't meant to be." Wie, who had three birdies and six bogeys in the second round, was visibly distraught in a greenside interview after the 18th, thanking the Japanese fans for all their support. "I made a couple of bad mistakes," said Wie. "That shouldn't have happened." Friday's late meltdown was reminiscent of her finish at the John Deere Classic in July where she bogeyed two of her last four holes, missing the cut by two strokes. No woman has made a PGA TOUR cut since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945. No one even tried again until Annika Sorenstam teed it up at the 2003 Bank of America Colonial, and only Suzy Whaley and Wie have played TOUR events since then. Wie missed the cut by seven strokes at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January. The Casio was also Wie's first tournament since she was disqualified in her pro debut last month. The top 60 players in the $1.7 million Japanese men's tour event made the cut, which was 3-over 147. Four players, including overnight co-leader Toshimitsu Izawa, were tied for the lead at 6-under 138. Wie was tied with 11 others for 68th place. Wie was on the brink of making the cut, but things started to go sour on the par-4 17th. After hitting the fairway with her tee shot, Wie's approach landed in the greenside rough. She chipped onto the green and then missed a 5-foot par putt. Because of a backlog of players, Wie then had to wait 20 minutes before playing the par-5 18th. On 18, her drive off the tee went into the right rough. She hit out onto the fairway, but her approach landed in the short rough on the edge of the green and she missed a 6-foot par putt after chipping on. "I hit the putt the way I wanted to," Wie said. "It just didn't break the way I thought it would." With a par on 18, Wie could have made the cut. "I was a bit nervous walking up the 18th fairway," she said. "I was just trying to play a good hole and make par, but it didn't work out that way." The teen star is only the second woman to play in a Japanese men's event. Sophie Gustafson missed the cut in the 2003 Casio tournament. Despite not making the cut here, Wie said she plans to keep playing in men's events. "Not making the cut here has not made me want to play in men's events," Wie said. "Hopefully, I can learn from the mistakes I made here and come back here." Wie wasn't about to read too much into her failure to make the cut again. "I don't know if it proves anything that I didn't make the cut," Wie said. "It shows that it's possible and hopefully next time I can do it." Wie won't have to wait long. She will play in the TOUR's Sony Open in Hawaii in January and said she wants to work on a few things before then. "I really realized here that I need to work on a few things before the Sony Open," said Wie. "I've got to work on my irons and my putting."
