SHANGHAI, China (PA) -- Englishmen Nick Dougherty and David Howell share the halfway lead of the HSBC Champions Tournament at 12-under 132 after Howell posted a 5-under 67 and Dougherty a 4-under 68 Friday at Sheshen International Golf Club.
Tiger Woods posted a 69 in the $5 million all-star event that is also serving as the kickoff of the 2006 European Tour, but a late bogey left him at 10-under 134 and tied for third with Nick O'Hern of Australia, two shots behind the co-leaders.
Five players are tied for fifth at 9-under 135. They are Paul Casey of England (68), Robert-Jan Derksen of Holland (70), Englishman Kenneth Ferrie (69), Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand (68) and Lian-Wei Zhang of China (68).
One shot behind that group at 8-under 136 is a marquee collection that includes world No. 2 Vijay Singh, U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell, European Ryder Cup players Thomas Bjorn and Ian Poulter, and Australian veteran Peter O'Malley.
Ferrie had charged into the lead midway through the round, helped by a hole-in-one on a wet and miserable day that made scoring well quite a challenge. Ferrie sank his 4-iron tee shot on the 209-yard sixth hole after he already made three straight birdies from the second, and made the turn in 31.
With heavy rain returning and visibility poor, it was unpleasant conditions for players and spectators alike, and world No. 1 Woods certainly did not enjoy himself on the 346-yard seventh.
A two-putt birdie at the long second had put Woods at 8-under, but five holes later he slipped over playing a chip from the side of a bunker and, with the ball not even making the green, he slammed his club against his bag.
He got out of the hole with a bogey 5, but at 7-under he had dropped from fourth to sixth and from one back to three behind. He ralied from that point, but a poor chip shot on the 16th turned what might have been a birdie into an unexpected bogey, and kept him from joining the leaders.
Howell had birdies at the second, fifth and eighth, while Dougherty, one of the three first-round leaders, picked up more shots on the 11th and 14th after resuming on the back nine.
