Interviews with Han, Hee-Won
lucasyun
2005-10-03
PAM WARNER: Hee‑Won, thank you for coming in and joining us again. Congratulations on your win.
HEE‑WON HAN: Thank you.
PAM WARNER: You're welcome, your fourth Tour victory, a 2‑shot win over Soo‑Yun Kang. Would you like to talk about your feelings on winning the tournament first?
HEE‑WON HAN: At first always good for winner. (I was) Very happy until I play on Monday. That's why I'm more happy.
Q. A lot of people struggled this week; you had only three bogeys all week. What went well for you? What were you doing so well?
HEE‑WON HAN: Actually, I just hit this fairway and the green, just kept thinking that because this golf course is pretty undulated and the fairways are undulated. That's why it worked this week for me.
Q. You had told us a couple of days ago that you really didn't want to come back on Monday and play?
HEE‑WON HAN: Right.
Q. How do you feel now that you did have to come back?
HEE‑WON HAN: Actually that's a pretty good thing because yesterday I was just waiting for five hours on the course and played like eight holes. It feels like not very good. But this morning feels ‑‑ come back pretty good, and started birdie, birdie. That's good for me.
Q. Can you tell us if you're playing next week over in Sacramento? How does this Monday finish set you back as far as preparing for next week's tournament in Sacramento, this week's coming tournament?
HEE‑WON HAN: Actually we play four days next week. But actually I played last year, that's why I know the course, I am just going tomorrow morning and play again.
Q. How much more fulfilling is this victory of what you had to go through with the delays and the waiting?
HEE‑WON HAN: I feel better today. That's almost same.
Q. Since you were involved in dousing your friend with champagne the last time she won, did you know you were going to get wet, did you expect they were going to come for you?
HEE‑WON HAN: Yes.
Q. When you started this week did you feel good?
HEE‑WON HAN: Actually ‑‑ you know what, we just not play last week. And then the week before I just missed the cut in the tournament, that's why I had just come back to San Diego. My coach was in San Diego and we were just doing some swing things that's better to me. That helped.
Q. Hee‑Won, what was the turning point in your round, when did you really know that you had the victory?
HEE‑WON HAN: 17th hole when I made the par putt.
Q. Can you go back to talking about the swing change with your Coach, what exactly did you work on?
HEE‑WON HAN: Actually nothing changed. We were just doing the same thing. The same rhythm and the swing pass, kind of that thing.
Q. On that putt on 17 did you get a little nervous when you saw the ball rattling around?
HEE‑WON HAN: Yes. It's always nervous out there.
Q. You only bogeyed three times, was there one hole on this course that made you stop and pause, get some strategy before hitting, one hole that was more difficult than the rest?
HEE‑WON HAN: Yes, like the first hole. I mean today's pin was pretty far back. No. 1, that was pretty nervous.
Q. What are your impressions of the course?
HEE‑WON HAN: Lots of greens undulated, fairways undulated. Pretty nice, nice view. Nice.
Q. Were you watching the leaderboard pretty closing, or do you do that?
HEE‑WON HAN: Yes, I watch it a lot. Because Soo‑Yun kept going up.
Q. Speaking of Soo‑Yun, you mentioned a bit about how you doused her with champagne. What prompted you to do that? How did you get the idea to do that, to douse her with champagne when she did that?
HEE‑WON HAN: Because a couple of months ago she won the Safeway Classic and we did the same thing. I don't know. I don't know.
Q. You don't know why you did it?
HEE‑WON HAN: First win. Her first win. We were all waiting for her. That's from maybe Korea.
Q. How long have you known her and how close friends are you with Soo‑Yun?
HEE‑WON HAN: I know about 10 years because we just grew up in the same area and we play golf, the same national team. Yes.
Q. Back then did you think you two would be one and two going head‑to‑head in an LPGA event?
HEE‑WON HAN: Yes, yes.
Q. How did it make you feel to have so many Koreans and Asians in the gallery, and how much more is it than usual tournaments?
HEE‑WON HAN: It's nearby LA, downtown Koreatown, you just expect it. A lot of Korean galleries coming up. That's pretty good for us, yes.
Q. Was it a big difference from other tournaments?
HEE‑WON HAN: Not really a big difference.
Soo-Yun Kang, 71-66-66=203 (-10)
Scorecard: Hole 1, 315-yard par 4: birdie ?56-degree wedge to five feet.
Hole 2, 483-yard par 5: birdie ?3-wood to 11 feet, two putt.

Hole 14, 496-yard par 5: birdie ?sand wedge to five feet.
PAM WARNER: Soo-Yun, thanks for coming in and joining us today. A great round, finished at 5‑under for the day and no bogeys to go to 10-under for the tournament and a runner-up finish. Do you want to first talk about today and your finish?
SOO‑YUN KANG: I'm so happy. I'm happy. I did a great job yesterday and today. I'm only like have unsatisfied about first round, but I think it was great play. Although I made like a few birdie putts the past few holes, still I feel great.
Q. What did you think of Hee‑Won's play this week, I think she had only three bogeys all week?
SOO‑YUN KANG: I think she did a great job. I think she got ‑‑ not lucky, she got what she had to.
Q. There is a very large Korean community in this part of Los Angeles in particular, and also certainly in Los Angeles a large Asian community, were you very aware of that in the galleries, and how does it compare to a typical TOUR stop in terms of the number of people here for you.
SOO‑YUN KANG: It was a good crowd. They gave me like good support. Like there is many young galleries, especially I know some of them, so it was great help.
Q. Can you tell us about your champagne visit on the 18th green?
SOO‑YUN KANG: We are all very close friends so the last time when I win, when I win -- when I won, they did that to me like it was really cheering. Yes, I did that for her.
Q. Was it Hee‑Won specifically before or just the group?
SOO‑YUN KANG: Hee‑Won and Birdie Kim and Grace Park.
Q. Did you think that you were going to be able to catch Hee‑Won at any point where you were at?
SOO‑YUN KANG: Four (shot) difference between she and I. I thought I might catch her but I missed many like birdie putts and then she did great so I couldn't.
