HANG ON From heavy rough, I hit down and through, and hold on tight to keep the face square. Getting through the thick stuff When you miss a fairway at some tour events, you're in ankle-deep rough. To play shots from heavy grass, I start by taking one more club than the yardage requires. Then I open the clubface slightly because the thick grass tends to close it through impact. I don't want the toe to turn over, or the hosel to get caught up in the grass and close the face, so I grip the club a little firmer and really swing down and through the shot. The tricky part is judging how the ball will fly out of the grass. Because it's nearly impossible to put backspin on the ball, I try to land it short and let it release. Anywhere on the green is great.
