Creamer Lapping the Field In France
By Sports Network - July 22, 2005
EVIAN-LES-BAINES, France -- Paula Creamer fired a 6-under 66 in the third round Friday to move seven shots clear of the field at the Evian Masters. Creamer completed 54 holes at 14-under-par 202.
Karine Icher posted a 4-under 68 to move into a tie for second place at 7-under-par 209, where she was joined by two-time champion Laura Davies.
Paula Creamer left Annika Sorenstam in the dust during their Friday pairing in France.Annika Sorenstam got within two shots after nine holes, but struggled on the back nine. She carded an even-par 72 to stay at minus-6.
Christina Kim, who shared the lead entering the third round with Creamer, stumbled to a 3-over 75. She was joined in a tie for fifth place by Lorie Kane (66) and Karrie Webb (71) at 5-under-par 211.
Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie shot a 4-under 68 in the third round to move into a tie for ninth at 3-under-par 213. Wie birdied the second, then birdied four consecutive holes from the sixth. Around the turn, she posted two more birdies and seven pars to close out a bogey-free round.
Creamer, who won the Sybase Classic earlier this year, opened with a birdie on the first to move to minus-9. After five straight pars, she tripped to a bogey on the seventh. Creamer then birdied the eighth to atone for that mistake.
The 18-year-old also birdied the ninth at Evian Masters Golf Club to get to minus-10. Creamer parred the first four holes of the back nine, while Sorenstam, her closest pursuer at the time, struggled.
Creamer birdied the par-3 14th. She then birdied the 16th to move to minus-12 and the Californian came right back with a birdie on No. 17. Creamer stretched her lead to seven strokes as she birdied the par-5 18th.
Sorenstam bogeyed the first, but fought right back to birdie No. 2. The Swede moved to minus-8, and within two of Creamer, with birdies on the seventh and ninth.
The 34-year-old bogeyed the 10th for the second straight round. She faltered to a double-bogey on the 12th to drop back to minus-5. Sorenstam got one stroke back with a birdie on the par-3 14th before closing with four straight pars.
Icher, a native of France, birdied the first to get to minus-4. She wrapped bogeys at the fourth and sixth around a birdie on No. 5.
The 26-year-old closed her opening nine with consecutive birdies from the eighth. Icher tripped to her third bogey at the 10th and then settled in with four straight pars.
Icher then ran off three birdies in a row from the par-5 15th to share second place.
Davies birdied her opening hole, but bogeyed the next. She climbed to 6-under as she birdied the par-5 seventh for the third straight round.
The Englishwoman dropped a shot at the 10th, but got that stroke back with a birdie on No. 13. Davies got to 7 under with a birdie on the 17th.
Lorena Ochoa stands alone in eighth place at 4-under-par 212 after an even-par 72. Wie was joined at minus-3 by Carin Koch and Meena Lee.
Paula Marti, Shani Waugh, Marisa Baena and Beth Daniel are one stroke further back at 2-under-par 214.
