Last year I reached my goal of becoming LPGA Rookie of the Year, but I want to improve every year and become one of the elite players. I am not very analytical about my swing, so I let my friend and coach, Rafael Alarcon, guide me. I try to keep my thought process simple.
The Ochoa file
Full name: Lorena Ochoa
Born: Nov. 15, 1981
Birthplace: Guadalajara, Mexico
Height: 5-6
Career highlights:
2001: NCAA Player of the Year
2002: No. 1 on Futures Tour
2003: LPGA Rookie of the Year
My swing hasn't changed much since I was a junior player in Mexico. I have been making some improvements, but I'm also trying to keep my natural action because I think it's important to feel comfortable on the golf course. As I keep getting stronger, I will be able to make the changes necessary to be more consistent under pressure, a requirement to win on the LPGA Tour. The main thing I'm working on is to have less movement at the top of my backswing, so I can eliminate unnecessary hand activity in the impact zone. That's a good thought for all players who want more consistency.
