2005 BellSouth Classic Play at BellSouth Washed Out By Sports Network - March 31, 2005 DULUTH, Ga. -- The first round of the BellSouth Classic was postponed on Thursday as heavy storms rendered the TPC at Sugarloaf unplayable. The round was first pushed back an hour, then the start was delayed until 10:00 a.m. ET. Another wait until 1:00 p.m. was set, but the course still was not ready so the action was pushed back two more hours. Tournament officials decided at 1:22 p.m. that the course would not be ready at all and suspended play for the day. The first round will start at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning. The plan is to play the second round on Saturday, then 36 holes on Sunday. A second straight Monday finish looms as a possibility because the forecast is for more storms on Friday. This marks the eighth tournament out of 14 this year to have at least one weather-related stoppage. Thursday's postponement of the first round was the third time an entire round has been wiped out in 2005. There was no play on Saturday of the Nissan Open and Wednesday's first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship never got off the ground. Last week, parts of the third and all of the fourth round of the Players Championship were played on Monday. There were several delays before Fred Funk was eventually crowned champion. Luke Donald, who tied for second behind Funk, withdrew on Thursday with a shoulder injury. Reigning Masters champion Phil Mickelson, current U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen and defending champion Zach Johnson headline the final tune-up before next week's Masters.
