Editor's note: On Sunday, Tiger Woods out dueled Phil Mickelson to win the Ford Championship at Doral. Here's a sampling of the congratulatory e-mails PGATOUR.COM received for Woods.
You can have your Super Bowl, your NBA Finals, your March Madness, your World Series, even your NASCAR. There is nothing like watching the best in the world playing head-to-head in the best game in the world. Congratulations Tiger on a great win in a great competition. You showed the world why we all knew it was just a matter of time before you regained the No. 1 ranking. Your talent and your determination are unparalleled. Despite perfect weather here Sunday afternoon, I gave up my round of golf to watch one of the best competitive rounds by two players head-to-head in a long time. I am already gearing up for THE PLAYERS and the Masters. The only thing better would be being there in person to see the best in the world tee it up. Good luck and thanks for the good golf.
-- Bob Alred
Tiger, One word -- awesome! Congratulations. My 6-year-old son, Austin, just got home from school and called for me to come home so we could go play golf. It is amazing the impact you have on children. I guarantee you 5, 10 years from now my son will remember yesterday's round between you and Phil. He was totally mesmerized the entire back nine and when you won he jumped up off the couch pumping his fist in the air and he looked at me and said "AWESOME." I could not agree more.
-- Shaun Wood
Hi Mr. Woods, Congratulations. I'm sure you receive thousands of these every day but I would just like to say, "Well done." I am a 14-year-old boy who is an extremely avid golfer (my handicap is 12) from South Africa and I think you are going to have a wonderful season this year. Hopefully, I will be able to watch you play live this year as I might be able to go to America at the end of this year -- who knows! I hope you are enjoying your victory, a well-deserved one, great final showdown, great eagle, great swing and great golf. P.S. Hope there’s still much more to come (a major, maybe). Good luck, Mr. Woods! Yours sincerely, Bryan Wester from the Michaelhouse School, South Africa.
Tiger, what can I say? Sundays now feel normal again. Thank you and Phil for a great "match" play during the (Ford Championship at) Doral -- filled with incredible shots, plenty of nerves and simply, great golf. I thoroughly enjoyed your dominant play and performance. Everything seems to be coming together (the driver, shot selection, the putting, and the fist pump) and as an avid golf (Tiger) fan, I am very excited about Sundays to come.
-- Ron Berry (fellow Stanford alum)
Tiger, Can you show me how to hit 298-yard 3-woods with a slight fade to an elevated green and make it stop on dime?
-- Carlos Mendoza
Congrats, Tiger. I'm so glad that you won the tournament and regained the No. 1 rating. You stay focused and it paid off! What a nice birthday gift for your Dad. Hooray!
-- Wendy Washington
Welcome back palm-sweating, thigh-grabbing Sundays. Thanks, Tiger and Phil.
-- Tom Keane
I am from a country, where golf is not popular -- Bulgaria. Last Sunday was a great competition and I was excited by the fantastic performance shown by Tiger and Phil. Tiger, I wish you to keep your reigning as No. 1 for another 5 years! Congratulations!
-- Tochko
Hey Tiger! Great victory for you! You are the one and only No. 1 golfer in the world. Keep on playing this way! Greetings from Germany.
-- Mathias Grimm
Other than Arnold Palmer, in his "heyday", (I can't) think of any player that plays the game with the intensity, determination and pride in winning that you bring to the table. Your desire to win every week puts you in a very special place, much like my childhood idol, Mr. Palmer. Fairways and greens, J.W. Coons, New Port Richey, Fla.
Tiger, Way to go. This morning at work I received a number of congratulations, only because every one who knows me knows that when Tiger is on top all of the planets are properly aligned and I am at the top of the world. Tiger's No. 1 Fan.
-- Irene Jackman
Way to go! I was pulling for you and it was great to see you come through. This was a tough one, because I have been a big fan of yours ever since you came on the scene, but I am also a big fan of Phil's since I'm left-handed. I feel him and Mike Weir carry the banner for lefties. This shootout was really fun to watch.
-- Keith Smith
Your win was great! My husband's birthday was Saturday, same as your dad's. We bought him a red shirt to wear Sunday, so your win was for him, too! He thinks you are the greatest! Keep the good work up and I will make sure he wears that red shirt every Sunday that you are playing. We want you on top again!
-- Lana Mourning
Congratulations, Tiger. You are finally back where you belong at the top of the food chain. What an unbelievable weekend of the golf we have just witnessed, the top four players in the world all performing (with Ernie winning in Dubai), just as the season is heating up. Bring on Sawgrass and the Masters.
-- James Turnbull
I actually yelled for you in my family room when you made the eagle. It is something to get to live through a great rivalry twice in my lifetime. I was thrilled by Jack and Arnold. I admired both players and they did so much for the game of golf when not many young people were inspired by the lure of the game. To get to watch player such as yourself and Phil battle it out in a final day is unbelievable that it is happening again in my lifetime. Two players I admire and respect what they have done for the game and the inspiration they have given to young people is fantastic. It is hard to tell when we will enjoy a time in golf that is any better than it is today with so many players that are capable of winning tournaments each weekend. I was especially impressed with the way Phil and you handle the camera bugs and the never ending "go in the hole" comments. Good Luck the rest of 2005 and I look forward to more Sundays like the Doral.
-- Earl Beck
That was the best finish to a golf tournament I have ever seen. I sprained my ankle on Saturday night but when Phil missed that chip in on 18, I was jumping all over the house. It hurt a lot later but I was so pumped I didn't notice. Congrats again and I can't wait to see what happens the rest of the season. Take care, John Casone from Baylor University
That was one of the most exciting final rounds I've ever seen. I was pulling for you the whole way but also was very impressed at the way "Lefty" kept hanging in there. I'm glad you two will be on the same side for The Presidents Cup!
-- Dan Holt
Dear Tiger: I feel very happy for your victory on Sunday and most happy for your No. 1 recovery. I had the pleasure to see you at my country in Argentina during (the World Golf Championships-World Cup in) 2000.Hope you'll return some day. Congratulations, Rafael Zavalia
I traded in the Kentucky Blue basketball game to watch you at the Blue Monster. I was not disappointed! Don't know if that round can ever be topped. Way to go Tiger!
-- Jennie Harshman
Huge -- that type of competition is what it is all about. I really enjoy the close-up shots of your eyes which show a level of intensity like no other. Great playing, Tiger. Congratulations on another memorable win.
-- Scott Wilbanks
Congratulations! That is what world-class golf is all about. The best players, playing their best golf. Golf is a game of fractions of inches in both timing, connection of club and ball and clearly in getting the ball in the cup. This could not have been more clearly demonstrated than it was at this tournament. Tiger, you clearly are coming back to your form and are bringing an incredible level of play to the world stage by many players, because of your high standard of play and dedication. You can see that the top players are all near parity, which was not the case when you first came out. Thanks to your quality of game, sportsmanship and stewardship, we are all benefiting, the pros and fans alike. I hope we see more of the fantastic rivalry between you and Phil, Vijay, Ernie, Retief and other young guns in the game. As someone else would say "thanks for the memories," as those of us watching will always remember the level of your play and of those that are playing with you. I hope to see lots more exciting matches, especially with Phil. Phil deserves tremendous credit for the battle he put forward and it's unfortunate that someone has to lose, but we wouldn't all be trying so hard if there wasn't a winner and a loser. Keep playing, and we will be sitting on the edge or our seats. It was really great golf by you both. All the best, Tom Calvin
