Nationwide Tour heads to Australia Feb. 15, 2005
lucasyun

For the fourth consecutive year, the Nationwide Tour has headed to the Southern Hemisphere for events in Australia and New Zealand. This week will see 78 of the Nationwide Tour’s best taking on 78 members of the Australasian Tour at the Jacob's Creek Open Championship in Adelaide, Australia. The tournament will offer a minimum $600,000 purse that will probably be considerably higher once the exchange rate is calculated. After three seasons at Kooyonga Golf Club, annually one of the toughest courses on the Tour, this year’s event moves to Royal Adelaide Golf Club. The players won’t find an easy test there, either. Royal Adelaide has played host to nine Australian Open Championships and in 1991 was the site of the Four Tours World Championship of Golf. That event featured six-man teams from the PGA TOUR, Australasian Tour, European Tour and Japan Tour in a round-robin competition. Winning the Jacob's Creek Open Championship has proven to be most beneficial in its first three years of existence with all three winners graduating to the PGA TOUR the following season. It started with Aussie Gavin Coles in 2002 and was followed by American Joe Ogilvie in 2003 and Aussie Euan Walters in 2004. All three are currently competing on the PGA TOUR. Vance Veazey, who won the season-opening BellSouth Panama Championship, will be one of the favorites this week, but he’ll be facing a strong field of competitors. Among the others to look for this week would be Aussie Greg Chalmers, a member of the Nationwide Tour who won the Australia Open at Royal Adelaide in 1998. Seven former PGA TOUR winners dot the field as well as seven 2004 Nationwide Tour champions. Add to that list young guns like Bill Haas, Bryce Molder and Brandt Snedeker and the Nationwide Tour is sending a formidable group down under. Following the Jacob’s Creek Open Championship, the Nationwide Tour will move next week to Christchurch, New Zealand for the ING New Zealand PGA Championship. The Golf Channel will show both all four rounds of action from both tournaments. The Nationwide Tour will make its domestic debut the week of March 21-27 at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open in Broussard, La., just outside Lafayette.
