TODAY'S PAPER A fractured family reunites Ex-GI accused of defecting to North Korea rejoins his Japanese wife in Indonesia By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA Saturday, July 10, 2004 - Page A2 JAKARTA -- In an emotional reunion far from home, a onetime U.S. soldier wept yesterday as he embraced his Japanese wife, Hitomi Soga. He allegedly deserted his unit in 1965, and his wife was abducted by North Korea. The family members journeyed thousands of kilometres to see each other to avert his arrest. "I'm very happy," Charles Jenkins, dressed in a suit and tie, his white hair swept back, later told a large group of journalists in the lobby of a five-star hotel in Jakarta. He held a bouquet of tiger lilies. On his lapel, the slender 64-year-old wore a pin bearing the image of Kim Il-sung, the late founder of North Korea. Mr. Jenkins, still wanted on U.S. desertion charges, landed with their two daughters at Jakarta's international airport on a Japanese plane. Indonesia was chosen for the reunion because it has no extradition treaty with the United States. The reunion began with Ms. Soga, 45, giving her husband a passionate kiss and then a long hug. She then turned to her daughters, who were in tears, and embraced them both. Ms. Soga was abducted by North Korean spies in 1978. She had not seen her husband and daughters since 2002, when North Korea allowed her to travel home to Japan. Mr. Jenkins did not accompany her, fearful he could be extradited to the United States and tried for desertion. Their daughters, Mika and Belinda, now 21 and 18, decided to stay with their father. In Jakarta, the family was taken by police escort to the hotel, where children gave them each a bouquet of flowers. They were also greeted by 200 reporters and dozens of well-wishers. Mr. Jenkins said he was "very happy'' to be in Indonesia. When asked what he felt about leaving North Korea he said, "I can't . . . there's no comment.'' His daughters looked overwhelmed by the attention on their first trip outside North Korea. Mika snapped out of her stupor when she received her bouquet of tiger lilies at the hotel. She bent down, and gave a little boy a kiss on the cheek and a big smile. There is no word on how long the family will stay in Jakarta or where they will go next. A Japanese embassy official said Ms. Soga, who arrived from Japan on Thursday, was "travelling light" and hoped to return with her family to Japan. But that is unlikely to happen any time soon because, according to the official, the negotiations between Tokyo and Washington to ensure Mr. Jenkins is not arrested are "in diplomatic deadlock." Earlier, a North Korean TV broadcast in Japan showed Mr. Jenkins and his daughters before leaving Pyongyang. He was smoking a Marlboro cigarette, a luxury item in the impoverished communist state. Mr. Jenkins was serving in a U.S. Army unit based on the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas when he disappeared during a routine patrol in 1965. It is unclear whether he left North Korea over the past four decades. While in North Korea, he taught English and played an American villain in government propaganda movies. He met and married Ms. Soga in 1980 in Pyongyang. She spent nearly a quarter-century in North Korea, before leader Kim Jong-il agreed with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi two years ago to allow her and four other abducted Japanese citizens to return home. Mr. Jenkins's fate remains uncertain. Japan's top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda, said Tokyo recently repeated its request for the United States not to push for his extradition. "But Washington's response has been rather severe," he said at a news conference in Tokyo. "There's still a possibility that the situation could change, but I can't comment on that now."
