The flag-draped casket, accompanied by Mr. Reagan's long-time wife, Nancy, arrived at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., following a flight from Washington and a slow, 30-kilometre motorcade from the airport. Hundreds of well-wishers cheered Mrs. Reagan when she left the plane, and huge crowds along the motorcade route waved flags, held their hands over their hearts and applauded as the hearse passed. In poignant eulogies at the Presidential Library, Mr. Reagan was remembered by his surviving children as a father, grandfather and husband who was finally free from the grip of Alzheimer's disease. "He is home now. He is free," said his son, Ron Reagan. "In his final letter to the American people, Dad wrote, 'I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.' This evening, he has arrived." After the service, Mrs. Reagan kissed and stroked her husband's coffin while clutching an American flag — seemingly reluctant to leave his side. "I love you," she said quietly. The former first lady was surrounded by her crying children, who tried to console her just before the sun disappeared from the gold-tinged hills in the distance. Earlier in the day, a funeral service at the magnificent Washington National Cathedral was televised to the world and attended by world leaders of the past 30 years. The California burial was private. Mrs. Reagan was led into Washington's cathedral by Major-General Galen Jackman. As they approached the front pews, President George W. Bush stood, offered his arm and led Ms. Reagan to her seat. Eulogies from former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney, former U.S. president George H.W. Bush and his son, the current President, praised Mr. Reagan as a warm and steadfast man whose convictions never wavered. Although she was too ill to speak publicly, a message taped earlier in the year by Ms. Thatcher was played as the first eulogy. She lauded him as a steadfast man who knew "instinctively" what to do and was a symbol of freedom and resolve in the struggle against communism. "With the lever of American patriotism, he lifted up the world. And so today the world — in Prague, in Budapest, in Warsaw, in Sofia, in Bucharest, in Kiev and in Moscow itself — the world mourns the passing of the Great Liberator and echoes his prayer 'God Bless America'." In his remarks, Mr. Mulroney recalled the 1987 visit to Ottawa by the Reagans. He related an incident at the end of the visit, when he and his wife went to the airport to see the visitors off to Washington. "As they headed towards us, President Reagan beamed, threw his arm around my shoulder and said with a grin: 'You know, Brian, for two Irishmen we sure married up!' "In that moment, one saw the quintessential Ronald Reagan — the leader we respected, the neighbour we admired and the friend we loved — a President of the United States of America whose truly remarkable life we celebrate in this great cathedral today," Mr. Mulroney said. The elder Mr. Bush, who served for eight years as Mr. Reagan's vice-president, was visibly shaken and offered the most heartfelt of the four eulogies. He described Mr. Reagan jesting after his 1981 shooting that he hoped all the doctors were Republicans. Ms. Reagan closed her eyes briefly as the audience chuckled. "Ronald Reagan was beloved because of what he believed," the senior Bush said. "He believed in America, so he made it his shining city on a hill. He believed in freedom, so he acted on behalf of its values and ideals. He believed in tomorrow so the great communicator became the great liberator." His son touched on a similar theme, saying that Mr. Reagan believed that the United States was the "hope of the world," not a country like all the rest, his policies based on the belief that "people were basically good and had the right to be free." George W. Bush also honoured Mrs. Reagan for the love and loyalty she had shown and alluded to the Alzheimer's disease that removed Mr. Reagan from the public stage a decade ago. "We lost Ronald Reagan only days ago, but we have missed him for a long time," Mr. Bush said. "We have missed his kindly presence, that reassuring voice." All living former U.S. presidents — Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and the senior Bush — and dozens of current and former leaders were among those assembled for the service. Prominent in the crowd was former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The cathedral's great bells pealed as Reagan's casket arrived. While Hail to the Chief played, the flag-covered casket was carried into the church by members of the U.S. armed services. The coffin had been driven from the rotunda at Capitol Hill, where thousands had paid their respects, to the cathedral. The rainy streets were lined with mourners, showing their grief as the convoy passed slowly by. The bells tolled again as the casket was carried out, ringing 40 times to represent Mr. Reagan's status as the 40th president of the United States. Mrs. Reagan — who maintained a strong demeanour during the service — paid a brief visit to her husband's casket at the Rotunda. The scene earlier Friday was televised live, she caressed the flag-draped coffin, gave it a kiss and several gentle pats and appeared to whisper a few words. That capped three days of pageantry and tradition unique to a presidential state funeral — the casket's procession by horse-drawn caisson along Constitution Avenue, the lying in state in the Capitol's hall of heroes and the national funeral service before an invitation-only crowd of 4,000. Tens of thousands of ordinary Americans visited his casket on Capitol Hill. The service drew a large contingent of foreign guests, including 25 heads of state or government, 11 former leaders and more than 180 ambassadors and foreign ministers. Several dignitaries also attended the California ceremony, but the service had a Hollywood flavor as well. Celebrity guests included actor Tom Selleck, singer Wayne Newton, former hockey star Wayne Gretzky, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who, like Mr. Reagan, became governor after a career in acting.
