Sturdy animals from Alberta to haul building supplies under plan to limit ecological damage EDMONTON -- In an environmentally friendly gesture, development-mad Hong Kong is turning to humble Alberta mules to haul supplies to build a cable-car system in a park. Consider it a modern-day transportation route built on the backs of old-fashioned beasts of burden. When Terry and Susan Aris, who have raised the hardy animals for 20 years, got a phone call last month asking if they would be interested in providing six mules, they could scarcely believe their ears. "It was like, 'Oh my God, that's so bizarre,' " Ms. Aris said. But their B.C. acquaintance, who is supplying saddles and panniers for the project, was dead serious. He had been asked to refer mule ranchers and contacted the Arises, who run the Tired Ass Ranch and have a "MR MULES" licence plate. "One of the first questions my husband had is, 'Well, what are the mules really going to do, because if they're not going to be working animals we're not interested in the project,' " Ms. Aris said. "We believe that the mules we raise are . . . put here for a purpose, and that's to do their job." The mules will certainly be working in Hong Kong. Planners decided to use them to transport supplies along a stretch of hilly terrain in an effort to curb ecological damage that would be caused by regular truck runs during the construction of a six-kilometre cable line in parkland on Lantau Island, the largest in the Hong Kong archipelago. The area includes the Po Lin monastery with its Giant Buddha hilltop statue. "We want to minimize the environmental impact the project will bring to the environment," Antonia Wong, the design engineer for the building contractor, told the Hong Kong Standard. The mules, which are now under a 21-day quarantine in a Vancouver stable, are to arrive in Hong Kong on May 7 by air at a cost of $27,000, nearly triple the $10,000 the Arises were paid for them. Ms. Aris figures the animals - there are three males and three females ranging in age from four to eight years -- will adjust just fine to their maiden flight. "They're very adaptable," she said. The mules, two of which the Arises bought from friends because the developers wanted older animals, will also be under quarantine at the tony Hong Kong Jockey Club, "which is pretty prestigious for some ranch mules that have never really seen the inside of a barn," Ms. Aris said. Gordon Sidlow, the club veterinarian who will care for the mules, said the project is "an interesting and innovative use of the animals." "Mules are hardy and relatively low-maintenance compared to horses," he told the Hong Kong Standard. After receiving a clean bill of health, they will then live in a paddock constructed to the standards of the British Army, which is advising on their handling. In the past, armies have relied on mules for patrols and battlefield transport. Mr. Aris will also go to Hong Kong for a couple of weeks to teach their handlers -- they will each have one -- and to help the mules acclimatize to the area and to their jobs. "It's one of those warm and fuzzy things where wouldn't it be neat to have the nostalgia of having the mules packing the stuff and everything? But bottom line is they're still animals, and they still need to be handled properly. You've got to work with them," Mr. Aris said. The developers plan to promote the arrival of the Canadian animals and may hold a contest for schoolchildren to name them. (Though they had names in Alberta, they are now known as Mules 1 through 6.) As beasts of burden, they will carry loads of up to 120 kilograms -- which will include cement, timber and the crew's lunch -- in several trips between construction sites six days a week for 15 to 18 months. After the construction of the tourism project is over, the Arises hope the mules will be used in a similar manner elsewhere, though there is also discussion of repatriating them. Surefooted and hardy, mules are uniquely suited to the project. As hybrids -- they are the offspring of male donkeys and female horses -- mules are stronger than horses, more versatile and, Ms. Aris argues, much smarter. They also do not scare as easily as horses and, as their reputation for stubbornness attests, are more cautious. "You tell a horse what to do, but you have to ask the mule," she said. Mules are often said to have the body of a horse and the extremities of a donkey, including long ears. Many stand about a metre and a half tall at the shoulder, which is as big as a quarter horse. Ms. Aris does not know why the project's planners sought out Canadian mules, but figures it may be because this country is known for its use of pack animals. "If a person was going to be looking at a picture of packing animals, like a pack horse or a pack mule, they would probably think of Canada because of our mountains and our western lifestyle."
