Korea STORY HIGHLIGHTS Vote tabulations give the Grand National Party at least 150 out of 299 Election is seen as endoresement of new president Lee Myung-bak Lee has tough stance on North Korea SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea's conservatives have won a majority in the new parliament with nearly all votes counted. An elderly South Korean is helped to cast her ballot at a polling station in Seoul on Wednesday. Official votes tabulated early Thursday by public broadcaster KBS gave the Grand National Party at least 150 seats in the 299-seat National Assembly. The GNP has won 131 local district races with 99.9 percent of ballots counted in Wednesday's vote. The GNP also took at least 19 seats in party-list proportional voting with 94.3 percent of votes counted. The victory is an endorsement of conservative President Lee Myung-bak, who took office in February on a pro-business platform. Lee, a former Seoul mayor and Hyundai executive, took office in February after a landslide election win last year with pledges to be a pro-business leader who will boost ties with the United States. Lee also has taken a tougher stance on North Korea, saying future cooperation between the two countries depends on the communist nation's nuclear disarmament. That is a change from a decade of liberal South Korean leaders who were reluctant to criticize Pyongyang and preached reconciliation. Don't Miss South Korea straddles the politics of change Lee to toughen stance on North Korea The North has reacted angrily to the new Seoul government, test-firing missiles and ejecting South Korean officials from a joint industrial complex in recent weeks. The North Korea issue, however, was not seen as a significant factor in Wednesday's elections, with many South Koreans long accustomed to tensions on the peninsula where the two countries remain technically at war. All 299 National Assembly seats were at stake in the vote for four-year terms, with 245 members to be elected through direct voting in local districts and the other 54 chosen by party-list proportional voting. The new assembly will convene May 30. Voter turnout was a record low 46 percent of 37.8 million eligible voters, according to preliminary figures from the Election Commission. E-mail to a friend
