캐나다에 있는 2개의 마을이 지구상에서 가장 살기 좋아 보이는 곳으로 선정되여 화제다. 옆에 있는 동네 " 로이드민스터"에 눌려 잘 알려지지 않았던, St. Walburg라고 불리던 조그만 마을이, 국제적으로 심사하는 기관에 따르면,인구 2만명 미만이 사는 마을에 한해서만 자격이 주어지는 심사에서 가장 살기좋은 곳중의 하나로 선정됐다고 한다. 이소식은 유엔환경위원회의 협조하에 시행되는 프로그람의 하나인 '살기좋은 마을 평가상 위원회"의 최종심사에서 밝혀진것이다. 690 명이 사는 사스카츄완주의 북부에 있는 이마을은 최종 후보로 선정된 8개 마을중의 하나이다. 3개의 마을이 북아메리카에서 선정됐는데, 그중 다른 2개마을이 브리티시 콜럼비아주의 Ucluelet 마을과 미국의 유타주에 있는 Salt Lake City 마을이다. ' 돈으로 살수없는 광고효과를 내고있다. 살기좋은곳을 찾기위해 St. walburg 를 생각하고 있다면, 지금이 그 적기일것이다"라고 이마을시장 Gordon Hall씨는 자랑이 대단하다. 이번에 살기 좋은 마을로 선정하는데 주안점을 둔부분은 환경적응에 따른 생활창조, 문화유산보호, 장래 개발계획의 현실성등을 꼽고 있다. 이마을이 꼽힌 또 다른 이유는 레크리에이션 설비와 지상위에 설치된 저수시설이 포함된 친환경계획을 현실적으로 적용시킨 때문이라고 한다. 또한 이마을에 살았던, 독일출신화가, Von Imhoff씨의 작품이 교회건물 천정에서 발견된점도 한몫했다고 한다. 11월 9일부터 13일 사이에, 중국 항조우에서, 각후보마을에 대한 설명및 축제가 있은후, 최종 우승마을이 발표될 계획이다. Published: Saturday, September 23, 2006 SASKATOON - The tiny Saskatchewan community of St. Walburg might be overshadowed by nearby Lloydminster but, according to an international competition, it's one of the world's best places to live among communities with less than 20,000 people. It's a finalist in the International Award for Livable Communities competition, a program endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program. The northern Saskatchewan town of 690 people is one of eight finalists -- the two other finalists from North America are Ucluelet, B.C., and Salt Lake City, Utah. "This is advertising we couldn't afford to buy. If we get some people looking at St. Walburg as a place to live, this will be time well spent,'' said Gordon Hall, mayor of St. Walburg. The award considers a town's quality of life created by the environmental practices, preservation of heritage, community sustainability and ability to plan for the future. The town qualified due to its recreational facilities and its sound environmental and planning practices -- including an above-ground water storage system. As well, there is art by German artist Count Berthold Von Imhoff, who lived in the town, found on a church ceiling. Winners will be announced in Hangzhou, China, after presentations by each nominee at ceremonies taking place Nov. 9 to 13.
