Jagr's status uncertain
Web Posted Thu, 09 Sep 2004 15:03:33
A couple days ago it didn't sound like Jaromir Jagr had much interest in playing in the World Cup of Hockey. Ironically, now that he seems keen to skate, there is a chance that injury will keep him out of the Czech lineup.
Jaromir Jagr is nursing a stomach strain, according to reports. (CP Photo)
Speculation is that Jagr is suffering from a sore hip and might not play in Saturday's semifinal against Canada (CBC, 6:30 pm EST).
Jagr apparently sustained the injury during the Czech Republic's 6-1 quarter-final victory over Sweden on Tuesday.
Jagr played in the game's first two periods, but sat out the third. He did accompany the Czech squad to Toronto, but didn't participate in a team practice Thursday.
Jagr plans to work out on the ice Friday before deciding if he's can suit up.
"We hope he can play," said coach Vladimir Ruzicka. "If not, we'll use Radek Dvorak.
"[Dvorak] practised there today on the right side."
Earlier in the tournament, Jagr drew harsh criticism from the media for his uninspired play and the Czech Republic's struggles.
According to reports, Jagr was unhappy about playing in the World Cup. Word was that he would've preferred to spend his summer resting rather playing hockey.
"If he doesn't want to play he should go home,'" said CBC hockey analyst Greg Millen when asked about alleged Jagr's comments.
Jagr looked more like his dynamic self against Sweden, generating scoring chances with his creativity and strength.
Millen said he spent time with Jagr prior to Tuesday's quarter-final game. He said Jagr spent the morning making sure his skates and stick were just right. That indicated to Millen that Jagr was excited about playing.
"I could tell that mentally he was into this game," Millen said.
And judging by his statements on Wednesday, Jagr is also looking forward to Saturday's game against Team Canada.
"I can think of nothing better than a World Cup game for Canada in Toronto against a Czech team that came from nowhere," Jagr said.
"What an atmosphere."
