It’s been more than five years since Tiger Woods’ last major championship title, but even the man whose record he’s chasing doesn’t have an explanation for such a drought.
“Obviously Tiger has had a very, very good year,” said Jack Nicklaus, whose 18 career majors victories remain four more than Woods’ total. “He’s not finished off a couple of majors that he’s had opportunity to be involved in.”
Speaking on a teleconference Thursday for the upcoming PGA Championship, Nicklaus maintained that Woods should be among the favorites at the year’s final major, if not the singular favorite.
That, of course, doesn’t necessarily translate into success.
“I don’t know what is happening between his head and between his ears,” Nicklaus continued. “Each person handles things differently. … Winning four times this year, he had to have something working for him between the ears.
“Will he win more majors? I think so. When? I don’t know.”
Nicklaus said he also believes other players should be given credit as opposed to blaming Woods for failing to win.
“We maybe ought to give Adam Scott and Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson a little bit of credit for playing better. There are 150 guys or so that will start the PGA – all good players and experienced players. … It’s not a one-person tournament
