Hundreds and hundreds of bodies burned like dark charcoal
Twisted around each other in fear
All blackened to nothing
Until there was nothing more to burn at Surchun, 1953

War is crime, more than crime 
Man kills man, but we only watch
Tinting our hearts with tincture of hatred.

 I don’t know my father’s death 
His golden youth was gone as the wind

 
Beyond, in that spring
Buds blossomed and fell on wet ground
Living songs of them rose up everywhere
The chilly cold wind was altered their nature

 
A water stream moves slowly down the hills
Crying, “sing a song”
It sees the long and cold war and spring rain
Survived by some
They are coming to home but not my father

Forever waits plaintively
To the song of Cuckoo’s weeping

수백 명의 숯처럼 타버린 시체들
공포에 서로 꼬여 
모두 검게 타 있었다

1953 서천에는 더 이상 태울 것이 없었다 
전쟁은 범죄이며 범죄 이상이다 
사람이 사람을 죽이는데, 하지만 바라다볼 뿐
증오의 색깔은 우리 가슴을 더 진하게 색칠했다

 아버지의 죽음은 알 수 없다
그의 젊음은 바람과 함께 사라져 갔다 

봄은 저만치 다가와
습한 땅 위에 꽃봉오리를 피워내고
생명의 노래가 사방에서 기지개를 펴고 
쌀쌀한 바람은 서서히 누그러지고 있었다

언덕을 흘러내리는 물줄기
울면서, “노래를 부르고”
긴 냉전이 지나간 곳엔 봄비가 내려
살아있는 있는 이들은 
고향에 돌아오건만 아버지는 돌아오지 않았다

끝없이 호소하는 듯한 
뻐꾹이의 울음으로
